The Benefits of Sealants & Fluoride Treatments for Kids

We need our teeth to serve us for many years, so it’s best to begin maintaining a healthy smile at a young age. Fortunately, there are simple and painless procedures that can be done at your child’s regularly scheduled dental cleaning appointment at Skyline Dental to do just that. Two types of preventative dental treatments for kids include sealants and fluoride treatments.

Sealants

Dental sealants reduce the likelihood of cavities forming, since they serve as a barrier to bacteria and food. Sealants form a thin plastic coating when applied to dry, cleaned surfaces of chewing molars and premolars. Sealants are applied to the pitted and grooved surfaces of the chewing molars because that’s where most cavities in children form. They also seal any deep grooves in the teeth. Dental sealants are typically applied as soon as your child’s permanent tooth start to show through, which usually occurs around the ages of six or seven. The sealant application is quick, easy and painless for your child. Keep in mind, that sealants don’t last forever; they’ll need to be reapplied once they wear away from the surface of the tooth.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride helps to maintain your child’s tooth enamel at its strongest state. When used on a routine basis in small amounts, combined with a healthy diet, and utilized with good oral hygiene, fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay. It also encourages strengthening of weaker areas of teeth. Fluoride is applied at your child’s initial dental examination or a recall visit. Like sealants, fluoride application is quick, easy and painless. Your child will be able to eat or drink immediately after application.
